A24’s Funny Pages trailer chronicles a cartoonist’s coming of age

Originally premiering at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the black comedy funny pages has released its first trailer about an aspiring young cartoonist and his faltering quest to succeed as a comic book artist.

Produced by A24 and Uncut GemsJosh and Benny Safdie, funny pages marks the feature film directorial debut of Owen Klinewho previously acted in Birthday’s party and Noah Baumbach The squid and the whale. If this surname sounds oddly familiar to you, it’s because it has two fairly famous relatives: Aactors Kevin Kline (A fish called Wanda) and Phoebe Cates (Fast times at Ridgemont High).

In the trailer for the coming-of-age comedy, we’re introduced to teen comic artist Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), who lets his parents know with a shrug and close range leaving high school. “Not all of my heroes went to college,” Robert offers as an explanation, as he contemplates working in the comics world. When he meets Wallace (Our flag means death Matthew Maher), a former artist at the prestigious Image Comics, Robert finds himself a reluctant mentor and involved in many wacky adventures.

With Daniel Zolghadri (Eigth year), the rest of the cast includes a host of actors who will have been taken to the pages of Robert’s universe as Marcia De Bonis (13 Continue 30), Maria Dizzia (The staircase), Josh Pais (The stall), and Miles Emmanuel (Calidris).

Before funny pages has its theatrical premiere, A24’s summer movie slate will have its next outing with horror-comedy Gen-Z Body Body Body August 12. With Maria Bakalova (Borate 2), Amandla Stenberg (The hate you give), Rachel Sennot (Baby Shiva), Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Lee Pace, and Pete Davidson as a group of about 20-somethings whose party is interrupted by a killer set to harden their vibes.
