Ladysmith cartoonist promises to laugh a day with new calendar

Marty West compiles his best of nine cartoon years

A Ladysmith cartoonist is selling a calendar that he says guarantees one laugh a day for the whole of 2022. Marty West has compiled his best work after around nine years of cartooning. He said he had no trouble finding inspiration for jokes.

“You just walk out your door and you’ll see something hilarious within minutes,” he said. “It happens all the time – just look for humor.”

About 30% of the cartoons were drawn by indigenous and international partners, but all of the jokes are original Western ideas. “I could probably do a cartoon every day, I just wouldn’t have time to draw them all,” he said.

West said the main selling point of his art is humor and that cartoons are just one medium.

“I tried art but I’m not good at it,” he said. “It started as stick men in first or second year and went from there. Now they’re just more advanced stickmen.

West said he hired help and it took seven months to put the calendar together and format it.

It can be purchased for $20 by contacting West at [email protected] He said he also hopes to make it available in local stores and online soon.
