Marvel and DC designer defeated by Ayrshire artist en route to UK title
An entertainer from Kilmarnock has shown his talents by being crowned UK champion.
Craig Imrie has defeated an artist for Marvel and DC comics to win the UK branch of the Illustrator World Series.
His opponent in the digital category final was Jerkmonger, who is a designer and cartoonist for the aforementioned Marvel and DC.
Craig has had a lifelong passion for drawing, but only took it seriously six years ago when his first son was born – he admits it was only because it was little almost anything he could do with a baby on his lap. .
Father-of-two Craig aims to illustrate his day job as he currently juggles his role as a box maker with a hobby that has turned into a second full-time gig.
Craig told the Kilmarnock standard: “There are two parts, there is the classic category and the digital category – I won the digital category.

“It’s one-on-one and you get an hour with a news headline that you have to illustrate with a drawing.
“It then goes to the judges who score it. I passed all the rounds and ended up winning it.
“So technically I’m the top competitive digital artist in the UK right now, which is amazing.”
Explaining a bit more behind the competition, Craig added: “You are given a title, the first round gives you a lot of time to prepare.
“The titles come from Buzzfeed, sometimes they are a little crazy! But it’s good because it takes you out of your comfort zone.
“It’s live on Twitch, which means you have that added pressure of people watching you live.
“There are incredible artists in it. The guy I beat in the finals is called Jerkmonger and he draws for Marvel and DC.
“I’ve been him for years, I have some of his books so when I was against him I thought I was going out for sure!
“I was a little stunned, it was amazing to be against these guys and get to know them.”
Craig says he started out more as a gamer before he really got into drawing.
He added: “My little boy is six now so when he was born I couldn’t really play games. I ended up picking up a pen and a notepad.
“I take it very seriously ever since, drawing was the only thing I could do with the kids sitting on my lap!
“I do a little bit of everything, I paint, do graffiti, I do 3D, basically anything related to art.
“It’s not my day job yet, I hope it will be though. I’m a box maker, illustration is technically more of a hobby, but it’s more like two full time jobs!
“It started out as a hobby, but things are going really well.
“Last year I worked on Godzilla v Kong which was a big movie, it was a good experience.”
