SSH cartoonist chosen for Absolutely Queer exhibition – Sydney Worldpride 2023
We are so proud that Herald of Southern Sydney the cartoonist Norrie has been selected to present his cartoons, his action for the inclusion of sexual diversity and an installation of a transport of delight at the Absolutely queer exhibition for Sydney Worldpride 2023 at the Powerhouse!
Absolutely queer will spotlight Sydney’s leading queer creators who are reshaping attitudes towards their communities. The exhibition explores their work, creative processes and personal stories through a series of new commissions including costume, design, art, fashion and multimedia.
From installation and performance artists to video game designers, cartoonists and fashion designers, these creatives form a diverse snapshot of LGBTQIA+ creativity and activism in Sydney. The exhibition will be accompanied by a public program of performances, music and workshops.
Creatives include Matthew Aberline and Maurice Goldberg of The Beautiful and Useful Studio; Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding whose work critiques social, political and cultural representations of race and identity; video game developers, animators and illustrators Scott Ford and Peter Foley of Fuzzy Ghost; and multidisciplinary artist Justin Shoulder who uses his body and art to forge connections between queer, migrant, spiritual and cross-cultural experiences.
They will be joined by gender- and body-diverse fashion house Nicol & Ford, founded by Katie-Louise and Timothy Nicol-Ford; designer Nikita Majajas of pop art jewelry brand Doodad + Fandango with his wife, international DJ Charlie Villas; Norrie, social justice activist and cartoonist, an advocate for transgender rights; award-winning Mardi Gras costume designer Renè Rivas; and legendary drag king Sexy Galexy, whose glamorous thirty-year stage career was highly influential in forging a new, modern take on drag, evolving beyond male impersonation.
Absolutely queer opens on February 17, 2023 and lasts until December 1, 2023.
